Sasha Makarewicz has a passion for comics and comics studies. Under the supervision of Dr. Irene Gammel, in Ryerson's Literatures of Modernity program (2013-2014), he completed a Major Research Paper entitled "'I Yam What I Yam!': The Modernist Performance of Popeye The Sailor." Focusing on the work of American cartoonist Elzie Crisler Segar (1894-1938), who created the iconic cartoon character Popeye the Sailor in 1929 in the comic strip Thimble Theatre, Sasha examined the comic strip's modernist and absurdist sensibilities in images and punch lines. Sasha is engaged in communicating his insights on Social Media.
